In October 2023, I was doing the least glamorous part of my job: weighing candles. The order already had my attention because of the Canadian winter. In January 2023, a pallet of Voluspa candles sat in a freight truck in Montreal for four days while temperatures dropped below -30°C. The wax developed frost lines and a cloudy, spotted finish; about a third of the jars were unusable. That incident cost us around $14,000 in replacements, freight and credits to the retailer. If you searched for how to melt down wax from old candles, you probably have a half-used jar at home, not a production deadline. Home remelting is a legitimate way to use the last ounce of a candle or to turn three stubs into one new one. The difference between my dock and your kitchen is process.

The honest truth is that a remelted candle will not smell like the original. The top notes have already burned off. What remains is the heavier base, which is why the biggest mistake people make is expecting a free refill and then lighting it and feeling let down. Do it for the ritual, for the last bit of wax, or for the fun of making something. Do not expect it to be the candle you bought.

  1. Freeze the jar for an hour. The wax shrinks and usually pops out in one piece. Remove the old wick tab.
  2. Chop the wax into small chunks and put them in a heatproof container. Melt it using a double boiler, not a microwave and not a saucepan over direct heat. Wax heats unevenly in a microwave, and overheated wax can start a fire.
  3. Use a thermometer. Keep the wax between 160 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit. If you see smoke or smell scorched wax, you have gone too far.
  4. Strain the liquid wax through a fine paper coffee filter or a fine mesh filter to remove the carbon that would make a new wick smoke.
  5. Add candle-safe fragrance oil if you want a stronger throw, then pour around a fresh wick in a clean, heat-safe candle container. Let it set for 24 hours before lighting.

One more safety note. The teacup in your kitchen cabinet is not a candle vessel. Pretty ceramic has not been thermal-shock tested for a flame, and a remelted candle poured into an antique teacup can crack when the heat builds. At Voluspa, every vessel goes through a thermal-shock test before we trust it with a wick. When you reuse random ceramics, you are skipping that test. Skip the teacup. Use a candle jar or a tin designed for the job.

Claims on packaging get the same kind of verification, by the way. Per the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260, ftc.gov), we don't print broad claims like 'recyclable' on a carton unless we can substantiate it. That is another version of prevention: check the claim before it becomes a customer's disappointment.

Prevention is not paranoia

Nobody gets quality wrong on purpose. Louise is a good production lead, and I like working with her. The failure was a system failure. A shortfall appeared on a Tuesday, and the options she could see were 'tell the quality manager' or 'make it work.' She chose the option that looked productive. After the quarantine, my job was not to assign blame. It was to make her next choice the correct one by default.

We rewrote the returns protocol. We added a 'do not repour burned testers' step to the training. We made it clear that a delayed shipment is recoverable; a defect that reaches a customer is not. Prevention is a system of small, boring checks, not a personality trait.
